ELERON • BMW G20/G21 Headlights Guide

The G20/G21 3 Series (2019–2022) has one of the strongest upgrade scenes in the BMW world — and four distinct ELERON front-end styles to choose from: the Laser-Look CSL (the top-tier Laserlight aesthetic most cars never got, with a switchable CSL DRL the real Laserlight never offered), the G80 M3-Style (the pre-LCI M3's angular signature), the Snake-Eye Arrow-DRL (BMW's newest design language, as seen on the LCI G80/G82 and the latest 4, 5, and 7 Series), and the LCI-Style conversion (the facelift look for pre-LCI cars). This guide compares all four honestly — including the one question that matters most on Adaptive LED cars: what happens to your AFS beam swivel.

The 60-second chooser

Pick by the car you're referencing: want the Laserlight look your G20 didn't come with → Laser-Look CSL. Want the pre-LCI M3's face → G80 M3-Style. Want BMW's newest arrow signature → Snake-Eye. Want the factory facelift look → LCI-Style conversion. Two hard rules cut across all of them: none fit factory Laserlight (5AZ) cars — for those, switchable DRL modules are the path instead — and if keeping factory AFS swivel on an Adaptive LED (552) car is non-negotiable, the Laser-Look CSL is the one style that retains it.

Four front ends, one platform: Laser-Look CSL, G80 M3-Style, Snake-Eye Arrow-DRL, and the LCI-Style conversion.

1) First: which factory headlights do you have?

Every decision downstream — which style fits, which build you receive, whether AFS is in play — starts here. Pre-LCI G20/G21 cars came with one of three factory options:

Standard LED (5A2)

Static full-LED beams, no cornering light, no swivel. The most common configuration — and the one with the most to gain.

Adaptive LED (552)

Beams swivel with steering (AFS). Looks near-identical to 5A2 from outside — the behavior test below settles it.

Laserlight (5AZ)

Blue "L" inlays and "BMW Laser" lettering visible even parked. None of the headlights in this guide fit 5AZ cars — the connector and architecture differ. The good news: if you have Laserlight and want the CSL yellow signature, you don't need new headlights at all — our switchable DRL modules for G20 Laserlight swap only the DRL board and keep everything else factory.

The 5A2-vs-552 test — two minutes, no tools

  1. Set the light switch to AUTO and wait until it's dark enough for the low beams to actually be on.
  2. Engine running, roll slowly and turn the steering wheel.
  3. Beams follow the wheel → Adaptive LED (552). Beams stay fixed → Standard LED (5A2).

Want the ground truth instead? Decode your VIN and read the option codes — the full walkthrough is in our BMW headlight identification guide — or send us your VIN and we'll confirm.

Replace the headlights — or keep them and swap only the DRL?

Two different products solve two different wishes, and your factory headlight decides which applies:

  • Standard LED (5A2): complete headlights are the path — the styles below add cornering lights, a projector cutoff, and the DRL signature your car never had.
  • Adaptive LED (552): both paths exist. Want a new look (Laser-Look, M3, Snake-Eye)? Complete headlights — the Laser-Look keeps your AFS. Happy with the factory adaptive headlights and only after the CSL yellow signature? Our G20 Adaptive LED DRL modules swap only the DRL board — headlights, AFS, everything else stays factory, no coding.
  • Laserlight (5AZ), pre-LCI or LCI: DRL modules only — switchable modules exist for both Laserlight generations, and complete headlights don't fit 5AZ.
The keep-your-headlights route: a factory Laserlight running the switchable yellow DRL module. Blue inlays, laser high beam, everything else — untouched.

How the modules work — five stalk-controlled modes, the legality logic, install — is in our CSL DRL modules guide.

2) The four styles, compared honestly

A) Laser-Look CSL — the flagship

The Laserlight was the headlight on the press cars — the top-tier option most owners never got. This is that housing shape with something the factory 5AZ never offered: a switchable CSL DRL in up to three colors. The only style where Adaptive LED cars keep factory AFS, and the only one with Tri-Color (Amber or Red) builds. LED projectors, cornering lights, auto-leveling, zero coding.

B) G80 M3-Style — the M face

The pre-LCI G80 M3's angular DRL signature — one of the most recognizable front ends in BMW's lineup — on your G20. Bi-LED projectors (~6,000 lm), cornering lights, auto-leveling, everything pre-installed, nothing transferred. White or switchable White/Yellow.

G80 M3-Style headlights →

C) Snake-Eye Arrow-DRL — the newest language

The arrow DRL is BMW's current signature — the LCI G80/G82 and the newest 4, 5, and 7 Series all wear it. This brings that design to your 2019–2022 G20, aligning it with what's rolling off the line today. Bi-LED projectors (~6,000 lm), cornering lights, auto-leveling, pre-installed. White or switchable White/Yellow.

Snake-Eye Arrow-DRL headlights →

D) LCI-Style — the factory facelift look

The G20 LCI facelift design — slimmer housing, inverted-L signature, and the blue inlays BMW reserves for the top-trim adaptive-look units — for cars that never had it. Two versions, chosen by the bumper on the car: the pre-LCI-bumper version gives 2019–2022 cars the facelift face with no bodywork (White DRL); the LCI-bumper version is the full conversion or the upgrade for factory LCI Standard-LED cars, with a switchable White/Yellow DRL and auto-leveling retained.

LCI-Style conversion headlights →

Same LCI-Style headlights, two bumpers: the pre-LCI bumper version on a 2019–2022 front end (top) and the LCI bumper version (bottom). We build both — you choose by the bumper your car wears, not its build year.

3) The AFS question — what happens to beam swivel

This is the question Adaptive LED (552) owners should ask every headlight seller — and rarely get a straight answer to. Here's ours.

Laser-Look CSL: AFS stays — genuinely

On 552 cars, the Laser-Look build reuses your factory electronic modules: unbolt them from the back of your original headlights, bolt them into the new housings — about 5 minutes and three screws per side — and your car doesn't know the headlights changed. The AFS steering logic, already paired to your CAN-bus, works exactly as BMW built it. This is one of the few upgrades on the market where an adaptive G20 keeps its swivel — no coding, no errors, no compromise.

G80 M3-Style & Snake-Eye: the honest tradeoff

These two ship with everything pre-installed and nothing transferred — simpler install, but on 552 cars the physical swivel is replaced by a fixed, wide Bi-LED beam plus a cornering light that activates with the turn signal. No faults are logged and nothing needs coding; you trade the moving beam for a wider static one. Whether that trade suits you is a personal call — we'd rather you make it here than in a support email after install.

The LCI-Style behaves like the G80 and Snake-Eye here: on 552 cars the swivel isn't carried over, replaced by a fixed wide beam. Standard LED (5A2) cars have no swivel to lose — every style is a pure gain for them, and the Laser-Look, G80, and Snake-Eye add cornering lights their factory headlights never had.

4) DRL colors & stalk switching

Every switchable build is controlled from the factory high-beam stalk — no app, no extra switch — and remembers your selection through ignition cycles. White (~6,000K) is the factory-matched daily mode; yellow (~3,000K), amber, and red are the signatures you select when the setting calls for them.

Switching sequences

  • Dual Color (White/Yellow) — Laser-Look, G80 M3-Style, Snake-Eye: flash 5× to toggle.
  • Tri-Color (Laser-Look, 5A2 cars): 5× → White · 6× → Yellow · 7× → Amber or Red (depending on the version you chose).
  • LCI-Style, LCI bumper version: 6× → Yellow · 5× → White. (The pre-LCI bumper version is fixed White.)
  • White single-color — fixed, nothing to switch.

Why Tri-Color only on Laser-Look 5A2 builds: the fully self-contained electronics that unlock the third color are what the pre-installed 5A2 build carries; 552 Laser-Look cars run the module-reuse Dual build because that's what keeps AFS intact.

Tri-Color W/Y/Amber — Laser-Look, 5A2 cars.
Tri-Color W/Y/Red — the boldest signature in the range.

The deeper background on switchable white/yellow DRLs — the legality logic, why switchability matters, how the OEM CS cars handle it — is in our CSL DRL guide.

5) Fitment, exclusions & OEM numbers

  • Fits: G20 Sedan and G21 Touring, 2019–2022 (pre-LCI), 320i / 330i / M340i and equivalents, with factory Standard LED (5A2) or Adaptive LED (552). LHD and RHD versions of every style.
  • Does not fit: Laserlight (5AZ) cars — different connector and architecture. Laserlight owners wanting the CSL signature: switchable DRL modules are your path.
  • LCI cars (2022+): factory LCI Standard LED owners have a direct upgrade — the LCI-Style headlights (LCI bumper version) add the adaptive-look blue inlays and a switchable White/Yellow DRL no factory LCI headlight offers. LCI Laserlight owners have switchable DRL modules built for the LCI Laserlight. LCI cars with factory adaptive headlights aren't covered by the complete headlights — send us your VIN and we'll advise.
  • On markings: assemblies are E-marked, with the white DRL mode as the everyday configuration — background on lens markings in our E-mark & ECE guide.

6) Install & aiming

The swap (2–3 hours)

  1. Remove the front bumper — standard on the G20: top fasteners under the hood, Torx screws in the wheel arches, undertray clips; disconnect fog/sensor connectors before pulling forward.
  2. Unbolt the factory headlights, disconnect the main harness plug.
  3. Laser-Look on 552 cars only: transfer your factory modules into the new housings — three screws, ~5 minutes per side. Every other build skips this: modules ship pre-installed.
  4. Plug into the factory harness — no adapters, no cutting.
  5. Test before reassembly: low beam, high beam, DRL and color switching, cornering lights, indicators, auto-leveling.
  6. Reinstall the bumper, set beam height with the integrated adjusters.

Tip from our install notes: painter's tape along the fender edges before bumper removal, and photograph connectors before unplugging.

Aiming: the last ten minutes matter

A sharp projector cutoff aimed too high is glare; too low wastes output. Set it once against a wall with the 1% rule and the beam is crisp, legal, and non-dazzling — full walkthrough in our headlight aiming guide. Anything odd after install — warnings, flicker, fast indicators — start with the CANBUS & LED error guide.

7) Finish the rear: G20 taillights

A transformed front with factory rears is half a build. Three matching directions exist — the GTS OLED style, the CSL Laser style, and the OEM+ Clear — all plug-and-play for G20 and G80. The full comparison lives in our dedicated G20/G80 taillights guide.

8) FAQs — G20/G21 headlight upgrades

I have Adaptive LED (552) — will AFS beam swivel still work after upgrading?
With the Laser-Look CSL, yes — your factory modules move into the new housings (about 5 minutes and three screws per side), so the AFS steering logic stays exactly as BMW built it. It's one of the few upgrades on the market where an adaptive G20 keeps its swivel. With the G80 M3-Style and Snake-Eye, the swivel is replaced by a fixed wide Bi-LED beam plus a cornering light — no errors, no coding, but no moving beam.
I have Adaptive LED and only want the yellow CSL DRL — do I need new headlights?
No. If you're happy with your factory adaptive headlights, our switchable white/yellow DRL modules for G20 Adaptive LED replace only the DRL board — headlights, AFS, and every other function stay factory, with no coding and full reversibility. Complete headlights are for owners who want a different design (Laser-Look, M3, Snake-Eye) or the Tri-Color DRL, which only the headlights offer.
Which style should I choose?
Pick by reference car: the Laserlight look you didn't spec → Laser-Look CSL; the pre-LCI M3 face → G80 M3-Style; BMW's newest arrow signature → Snake-Eye; the factory facelift look → LCI-Style conversion. If AFS retention or a Tri-Color DRL matters, the Laser-Look is the only style offering either.
My car has Laserlight (5AZ). What are my options?
None of the complete headlights in this guide fit 5AZ cars — the connector and internal architecture differ. But you likely don't need them: your Laserlight is already the top-tier housing, and our switchable white/yellow DRL modules for G20 Laserlight give you the CSL signature while keeping everything factory — no coding, fully reversible.
Do any of these require coding?
No — every style, on both Standard LED (5A2) and Adaptive LED (552) harnesses, is plug-and-play with zero coding. Each build carries electronics configured for its specific harness, so the car reads them as native headlights with no faults logged.
I have Standard LED (5A2). What do I actually gain?
Beyond the style itself: cornering lights — a function your factory headlights never had — a sharp projector cutoff, and on the Laser-Look, the Tri-Color switchable DRL (White + Yellow + Amber or Red) with every module pre-installed. Auto-leveling continues to work as before.
How does the DRL color switching work?
From the factory high-beam stalk, with the selection remembered through ignition cycles. Dual Color builds (Laser-Look, G80, Snake-Eye): flash 5× to toggle White/Yellow. Tri-Color builds (Laser-Look, 5A2 cars): 5× White, 6× Yellow, 7× Amber or Red. LCI-Style (LCI bumper version): 6× Yellow, 5× White. White single-color versions are fixed.
I have a 2019–2022 pre-LCI G20. Can I get the LCI facelift look without changing my bumper?
Yes — the LCI-Style headlights' pre-LCI bumper version puts the facelift design, blue inlays included, in a housing shaped for your existing front end: no bodywork, no coding, White DRL, beam height set manually at install. Want the full conversion with the switchable White/Yellow DRL and auto-leveling? Fit an LCI bumper (sourced separately) and run the LCI bumper version — send your VIN first so we confirm the configuration.
Does everything fit the G21 Touring and M340i?
Yes. The G20 Sedan and G21 Touring share identical headlight mounting points and connectors, and all trims from 320i through M340i are covered — just match your factory headlight type (5A2 or 552) and driving side.

Pick your G20's front end

Every pair is configured to your exact car — factory headlight type, DRL build, driving side — and bench-tested before shipping, with a 2-year warranty and 14-day free returns. Not sure whether you have 5A2, 552, or 5AZ? Send your VIN and we'll confirm.
