BMW G20 Pre-LCI to LCI Conversion Guide: What Changed, What You Can Convert, and the Three Ways to Get the Facelift Look

Andrei PopescuSeptember 22, 20265 min read3 views

The G20 LCI changed the headlights, bumpers, grille and interior — not the taillights. Here's what a 2019–2022 car can realistically convert, and the three routes to the facelift front: LCI-design headlights on your existing bumper, the full bumper conversion, or genuine BMW parts — with the honest trade-offs of each.

ELERON • BMW G20 LCI Conversion Guide

The 2022 facelift gave the G20/G21 3 Series its sharpest face — and left every 2019–2022 car looking a generation older overnight. "Pre-LCI to LCI conversion" is now one of the most searched G20 upgrades, and one of the most confusingly answered: some sellers push a full bumper-and-harness project, some claim it can't be done at all. This guide sets it straight: exactly what the LCI changed (and what it didn't), which of those changes you can realistically convert, and the three routes to the facelift look — from a no-bodywork headlight swap to the complete front-end conversion — with the honest trade-offs of each.

The 60-second version

The G20 LCI changed the headlights, front bumper, rear bumper, grille insert and interior — the taillights stayed the same. The headlights are the single biggest visual tell, and they're convertible: Route 1, LCI-design headlights built for the pre-LCI bumper — no bodywork, no coding, an afternoon. Route 2, an LCI bumper plus the LCI-bumper version of the same headlights — the complete facelift front, switchable White/Yellow DRL, auto-leveling retained. Route 3, genuine BMW LCI parts — the most expensive and the only one that needs harness work and coding. The interior (curved display, iDrive 8) is not realistically convertible; nobody honest will sell you that.

Left: the LCI front end. Right: a pre-LCI car wearing the LCI-design headlights on its untouched 2019–2022 bumper — Route 1 next to Route 2, same light, same lot.

1) What the G20 LCI actually changed

The facelift reached production in mid-2022. Item by item — because "everything changed" is what gets people quoted for a full conversion they don't need:

Area Pre-LCI (2019–2022) LCI (2022+) Visual weight
Headlights Taller housing with the lower "notch"; hexagonal-style DRL blades Slimmer housing, notch gone, inverted-L DRL signature; blue inlays on the adaptive-look units Biggest single tell
Front bumper Base: T-shaped fog-lamp elements; M Sport: separate squarish corner intakes Sharper crease lines; M Sport: large hexagonal lower intake with the plate inside it Large, but only in profile with the headlights
Kidney grille Single vertical bars Same size — double-bar louvres, more angular contours Subtle
Rear bumper Reflectors in T-shaped elements Revised lines to match the front Subtle
Taillights L-shaped LED signature Unchanged — same housing, same signature None
Interior Separate cluster and screen, iDrive 7, gear lever Curved display (12.3" + 14.9"), iDrive 8, toggle selector, new dashboard Huge inside; invisible from outside

2) What you can convert — and what you can't

Realistically convertible

  • Headlights — the core of the look, and the part with a purpose-built solution (sections 4–5).
  • Front bumper — an aftermarket LCI-style bumper for pre-LCI cars, or a genuine LCI bumper with its fitting parts, painted to match.
  • Grille — LCI grille inserts fit; a small change that helps sell the whole face.
  • Rear bumper — possible, rarely done: the difference is subtle and the taillights already match.

Not realistically convertible

  • The interior. The curved display needed a new dashboard; the pre-LCI and LCI dash and console don't interchange, and the software stack is a different generation. Aftermarket screens exist, but that's a different project with a different result.
  • Genuine LCI headlights as a bolt-on. Different mounting geometry, connector and coding — see Route 3 for what it really takes.

The good news hiding in this list: everything the car shows to the outside world is convertible, and the headlights alone carry most of it.

Which route is mine? Tap your situation

Four cases cover almost every G20/G21 on the road.

Pre-LCI (2019–2022), I want the LCI look and I'm keeping my bumper
Route 1. LCI-Style headlights, pre-LCI bumper version. No bodywork, no coding, white DRL, an afternoon. Works on Standard LED (5A2) and Adaptive LED (552) cars. See Route 1 →
Pre-LCI, I want the complete facelift front end
Route 2. LCI bumper and grille, then the LCI bumper version of the headlights — switchable White/Yellow DRL, auto-leveling retained. Budget the paint shop alongside the bumper. See Route 2 →
I already have an LCI (2022+) with Standard LED headlights
LCI bumper version, direct fit — you gain the adaptive-look blue inlays and a switchable White/Yellow DRL no factory LCI headlight offers. LCI cars with factory adaptive headlights aren't covered; send your VIN. See Route 2 →
I have Laserlight (5AZ), any year
Complete headlights don't fit 5AZ. Your headlight is already the top-tier housing — add the CSL signature with switchable DRL modules, everything else stays factory.

3) The three routes to the LCI look, compared

Route 1 · Headlights only Route 2 · Headlights + LCI bumper Route 3 · Genuine BMW LCI parts
What you fit LCI-design headlights, pre-LCI bumper version LCI bumper + grille, LCI-bumper version of the same headlights OEM LCI headlights, bumper, grille, harness/adapter
Bodywork None Bumper swap + paint Bumper swap + paint
Coding None None Required — different generation electronics
DRL White Switchable White / Yellow White (factory)
Auto-leveling Manual beam height, set at install Retained Depends on coding outcome
How much of the look Most of it — the headlights carry the facelift All of it, front on All of it, front on
Time & risk An afternoon; fully reversible A weekend + paint shop; reversible Days, a coder, a body shop; used-part risk; hardest to reverse
Cost picture One pair of headlights Headlights + bumper + paint/fitting Highest — genuine headlights alone typically cost more than Routes 1 or 2 complete
Route 1 (top) and Route 2 (bottom) up close: identical LCI-design headlights — the only difference is the bumper around them.

4) Route 1: LCI headlights on your pre-LCI bumper

The route most pre-LCI owners actually want once they see it: the LCI headlight design — slim housing, inverted-L DRL, the blue inlays BMW reserves for the adaptive-look units — in a housing shaped to the pre-LCI bumper's cutline. The pre-LCI and LCI bumpers wrap the headlight differently, which is exactly why a genuine LCI unit won't sit in a pre-LCI front end; this version is built for it.

  • No bodywork, no coding — the same swap as any headlight replacement: bumper loosened, unbolt, plug in, done.
  • Fits pre-LCI cars with factory Standard LED (5A2) or Adaptive LED (552); G20 Sedan and G21 Touring; LHD and RHD.
  • White DRL on this version; beam height is set once with the housing adjusters (no auto-leveling on the pre-LCI bumper version) — ten minutes with the wall method.
  • 552 cars: the AFS beam swivel isn't carried over — fixed wide beam instead. If keeping swivel matters more than the LCI look, the Laser-Look CSL in our G20 styles guide is the one that retains it.

G20/G21 LCI-Style headlights — pre-LCI bumper version →

Route 1 on the car: LCI headlights, your pre-LCI bumper (highlighted) — nothing else changes.
The hardware: pre-LCI bumper version, housing cut for the pre-LCI front end.

5) Route 2: the full front-end conversion

Route 2 on the car: the LCI bumper (highlighted) is the one extra part — the headlights are the LCI bumper version.
Installed, in yellow mode — the switchable DRL no factory LCI headlight offers.

Want the car to read as an LCI from every angle, not just the headlights? Fit an LCI front bumper and grille, then run the LCI-bumper version of the same headlights — the unit shaped for the facelift front end. This is also the upgrade for factory LCI cars with base Standard LED headlights: the adaptive-look design with blue inlays that the base units never had.

  • Bumper choice: aftermarket LCI-style bumpers made for pre-LCI cars, or a genuine LCI bumper with its brackets and fitting parts. Either way it's painted to match — budget for the paint shop as well as the part.
  • Switchable White/Yellow DRL on this version: 6× on the high-beam stalk for yellow, 5× back to white, selection remembered. The legality logic is in our CSL DRL guide.
  • Auto-leveling retained — on converted cars as well as factory LCI cars.
  • No coding for the headlights. The bumper is the only project here.

Select the version by the bumper the car will wear, not by its build year — send your VIN and the bumper you're fitting and we'll confirm the configuration before you order.

6) Route 3: genuine BMW LCI parts — the honest picture

Fitting the factory LCI headlights to a pre-LCI car is possible — it's just a bigger project than anyone selling the parts tends to say. Three things stand in the way:

  • Geometry. The LCI headlight is shaped for the LCI bumper. On a pre-LCI front end it doesn't sit, so the bumper conversion isn't optional — it's step one.
  • Electronics. The LCI headlights speak to a different generation of the car's lighting electronics; the connector and signalling differ. Expect a harness adapter and a coding session, and check whether every function — leveling, welcome light, high-beam behaviour — survives it.
  • Cost and provenance. Genuine LCI headlights, new or used, typically cost more on their own than Route 1 or Route 2 complete — before the bumper, paint, adapter and coding — and used units arrive with unknown history and no warranty.

It's the right route for one buyer: someone who wants an all-OEM car and has the budget and a coder on call. For everyone else, Routes 1 and 2 give the same face for a fraction of the effort — which is why some online claims that a pre-LCI G20 "can't" get LCI headlights are simply describing Route 3's difficulty and ignoring that purpose-built alternatives exist.

7) Fitment: which factory headlights qualify

Fits

Pre-LCI Standard LED (5A2)

Static beams, no blue elements. Route 1 or 2.

Fits

Pre-LCI Adaptive LED (552)

Looks like 5A2, beams swivel. Route 1 or 2; swivel not carried over.

Fits

LCI Standard LED (2022+)

Already the LCI shape — the LCI bumper version adds blue inlays and the switchable DRL.

Doesn't fit

Laserlight (5AZ), any year

Blue "L" inlays, "BMW Laser" lettering. DRL modules are the route.

Your car Factory headlights Version to order
Pre-LCI 2019–2022, keeping the bumper Standard LED (5A2) or Adaptive LED (552) Pre-LCI bumper version (Route 1)
Pre-LCI 2019–2022, converting to an LCI bumper Standard LED (5A2) or Adaptive LED (552) LCI bumper version (Route 2)
Factory LCI 2022+ Standard LED LCI bumper version
Any G20/G21 Laserlight (5AZ) — or factory LCI adaptive Not compatible. Laserlight owners wanting a new signature: switchable DRL modules instead

Not sure whether you have 5A2, 552 or 5AZ? The two-minute test and the VIN method are in our BMW headlight identification guide — or send us your VIN. Sedan and Touring share identical fitment; 320i through M340i covered.

8) The rear: nothing to convert (and what to do instead)

This is the part most conversion write-ups get wrong or skip: the G20 LCI did not change the taillights. Same housing, same L-shaped signature, front to back. A pre-LCI car with the front converted already matches an LCI from behind, and there is no "LCI taillight" to buy. If you want the rear to feel as new as the front, that's a style choice rather than a conversion — the GTS OLED, CSL Laser and OEM+ Clear options are compared in our G20/G80 taillights guide. And if what you're after is a signature newer than the LCI's — the arrow DRL of the current G80/G82 and the latest 4 and 5 Series — that's a different headlight altogether: the Snake-Eye in the G20 styles guide.

9) FAQs — G20 LCI conversion

Can a pre-LCI G20 get LCI headlights?
Yes — two ways. LCI-design headlights built for the pre-LCI bumper fit 2019–2022 cars with no bodywork and no coding. For the complete facelift front, fit an LCI bumper and the LCI-bumper version of the same headlights. What isn't a bolt-on is a genuine BMW LCI headlight, which needs the bumper conversion plus a harness adapter and coding — the difficulty that some online claims of "it can't be done" are actually describing.
Do I have to change the bumper to get the LCI look?
No. The pre-LCI bumper version delivers the LCI headlight design — inverted-L DRL, blue inlays — in a housing shaped for your existing front end, and the headlights are the largest part of the facelift's identity. The bumper becomes a choice for owners who want the complete LCI profile and the switchable White/Yellow DRL that comes with the LCI-bumper version.
Did the G20 LCI change the taillights?
No. The 2022 facelift kept the taillights unchanged — same housing, same L-shaped LED signature. A pre-LCI car needs nothing at the rear to match an LCI; any taillight change is a style upgrade, not a conversion.
What exactly did the G20 LCI change?
Headlights (slimmer, inverted-L DRL, no lower notch), front bumper (M Sport: hexagonal lower intake with the plate inside), a revised rear bumper, double-bar grille louvres, and — the biggest change — the interior: curved display, iDrive 8, toggle gear selector, new dashboard. Taillights and body panels stayed the same. Production switched to the LCI in mid-2022.
Can I convert the interior to the LCI curved display?
Not realistically. The curved display required a new dashboard; the pre-LCI and LCI dash and centre console don't interchange, and the software is a different generation. Aftermarket screen upgrades exist but aren't an LCI conversion. Everything visible from outside the car is convertible; the cabin isn't.
Does the conversion need coding?
Routes 1 and 2 — the purpose-built headlights on either bumper — need no coding: their electronics are built for the pre-LCI car's lighting system. Route 3, genuine LCI headlights, needs a harness adapter and coding because it brings a different generation of electronics to the car.
I have Adaptive LED (552). What happens to the swivel?
The LCI-Style headlights replace the AFS swivel with a fixed wide beam — no errors, no coding, but no moving beam. If retaining factory AFS matters more to you than the LCI design, the Laser-Look CSL style reuses your factory modules and keeps it; the comparison is in our G20 styles guide.
Does this work on the G21 Touring?
Yes. The G20 Sedan and G21 Touring share identical headlight mounting points, connectors and bumper architecture front-on, so both routes apply the same way — just match your factory headlight type and driving side.
