BMW CSL Yellow DRLs: The Switchable White/Yellow Module Guide for F22, F30, F32, G20, G22, G30 & M Cars

Most yellow DRL modules lock you into yellow forever — and get you flagged at TÜV and MOT. Here's how switchable white/yellow CSL DRL modules solve it: the legality logic, the five stalk-controlled modes, and every supported BMW from F22 to G30, M cars included.

Switchable White / Yellow DRL Modules — BMW 2 Series G42 & M2 G87

The CSL Yellow Signature on Your Factory LED Headlights — Adaptive & Standard, EU & US Versions — No Coding, Fully Reversible — 2021+

BMW G42 Coupe • 220i • 230i • M240i • G87 M2 • 2021+ • Adaptive (S552A) & Standard LED • EU & US

The M4 CSL and M3 CS made the yellow DRL the mark of a motorsport special — and the G87 M2 and G42 2 Series wear the same family face, with the large angled etched DRL rings that carry it perfectly. This set puts the switchable CSL yellow inside the headlights your car already has: the ELERON modules bolt onto the factory mounting points, an inline control box handles the switching from your high-beam stalk, and nothing is cut, coded, or permanent.

One set covers both headlights, and unlike most kits on the market — which fit the Adaptive LED headlights only — we build a version for every G42/G87 configuration: Adaptive (BMW's "LED module High") and Standard ("LED module Basic"), in EU and US spec. Fits the BMW 2 Series Coupe G42 from 2021 and the M2 G87 from 2023. Select your market and headlight type below; if you're unsure of either, send us your VIN and we'll confirm both.

Step 1 — Select Your Market

BMW fits different DRL modules to EU and US market cars, so we build a dedicated version for each. Select the market your car was originally built for — not where it's currently registered.

EU

EU Market

Your car was manufactured and originally sold for the European market. UK cars: select EU.

US

US Market

Your car was originally built for the North American market — even if it's now registered in Europe.

Step 2 — Adaptive or Standard LED?

The two headlights look identical from the outside — same housing, same angled DRL rings — but they use different DRL modules inside, so we build a version for each.

BMW G42 2 Series / G87 M2 LED headlight — the DRL these modules replace; Adaptive and Standard look identical
Adaptive and Standard wear the same face — the difference is inside.

Adaptive LED (S552A)

BMW's "LED module High." The adaptive headlights with anti-glare matrix high beam — the beam visibly cuts segments out around oncoming traffic and follows your steering at night.

Standard LED

BMW's "LED module Basic." The standard full-LED headlights — fixed beam pattern, no matrix behavior. Most kits on the market skip these; we build for them too.

They look the same — so how do you tell? Not by looking: on the G42 and G87 there's no external difference between the two. The behavioral clue is the high beam — Adaptive headlights run an anti-glare matrix that visibly blanks out segments around other cars and tracks the steering; Standard headlights hold a fixed pattern. The definitive answer is option code S552A on your vehicle order — send us your VIN and we'll confirm your headlight type and market in minutes.

How It Works

Your factory DRL is driven by two LED modules bolted inside the headlights. This set replaces them with ELERON dual-color units — finished assemblies, LED board bonded to its own aluminum heatsink — on the exact same mounting points, using the original screws. A compact control box then sits inline in the headlight harness: the car-side connector plugs into the box, the box plugs into the headlight, factory male/female connectors on both ends. Nothing is cut, nothing is spliced.

The modules draw the same current and speak the same signals as the factory DRL, so the car sees nothing unusual: no dashboard warnings, no flicker, and the welcome-light sequence plays exactly as before.

Why the inline box existsThe stalk-switching logic has to live somewhere, and putting it inside the headlight would mean baking the housing open. The inline box is what keeps this a bolt-and-plug install — it's the part that reads your high-beam stalk and tells the modules which color to run. Stick it anywhere convenient in the engine bay with the supplied tape, away from direct exhaust-manifold heat. (Our complete headlight units carry this logic built in — no box needed there.)

DRL Control

Every mode switches from your factory high-beam stalk with low beams off. Your selection persists through ignition cycles.

A left-right progressive strobe in your current color; flash 7× again to strobe the other color. Strictly for a parked car on private ground — flashing forward lights are illegal on public roads in most countries.

Engineered to Stay on the Car

The Right Module for Your Exact Headlight

Most G42/G87 yellow-DRL kits fit the Adaptive LED headlights only. We build four versions — Adaptive and Standard, EU and US — matching BMW's own "High" and "Basic" module split, each mounting on the factory points with the original screws. Whatever your configuration, there's a correct version, not a compromise.

Zero Coding, Zero Errors

The modules draw the same current and speak the same signals as the factory DRL, so the car's diagnostics stay clean — no coding, no dashboard warnings, no flicker. The welcome-light sequence is preserved. Plug in, bolt down, done.

Fully Reversible — OEM Stays OEM

Your factory modules come out intact, and the harness is never cut or spliced — the inline box uses factory connectors on both sides. Bolt the originals back in for a lease return, a sale, or a dealer visit: same screws, no residue, no trace.

The CSL Yellow — On Factory Headlights

The switchable yellow DRL signature usually means buying complete aftermarket headlights. This set delivers it inside the LED headlights your car came with — run the clean factory white day to day, flick to yellow when the occasion suits.

Matched Pairs — Binned Together

Left and right modules are color-matched at QC before they ship, so your DRLs read identical side-to-side. Cheap imports often mix LED bins — one headlight slightly warmer than the other — and once you've noticed the difference, you can't un-notice it.

Factory Functions Untouched

The DRL is its own circuit. Every factory lighting function — from the welcome sequence to the anti-glare matrix and adaptive behavior on S552A cars — keeps working exactly as BMW designed. The modules and box never touch those systems.

2-Year Warranty

Two years of coverage from delivery date.

Installation

A bolt-and-plug job with basic hand tools (T20/T25 Torx, 8/10 mm sockets, trim tool). Typical time: 1.5–2 hours for both sides. A shop will quote 1–2 hours of labor.

  1. Gain access to the back of each headlight. On the G42/G87, the cleanest route is removing the front wheel and fender liner on each side; taking the front bumper off gives the most working room.
  2. Disconnect the factory DRL connector and unbolt the OEM module.
  3. Bolt the ELERON module in its place using the original screws — same mounting points.
  4. Seat the control box inline in the headlight harness: the car-side connector plugs into the box, and the box plugs into the headlight. Factory connectors on both sides — nothing is cut or spliced.
  5. Mount the box anywhere convenient in the engine bay with the supplied double-sided tape, away from direct exhaust-manifold heat.
  6. Test before closing up — verify the 3× White/Yellow toggle and the 5× Auto mode, plus the welcome light.
  7. Refit the liner (or bumper) and wheel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get the CSL yellow DRLs on my M2 or 2 Series without replacing the headlights?

Yes — that's exactly what this set is. The ELERON modules replace the factory DRL modules inside your existing LED headlights, giving you a switchable White/Yellow signature with no headlight swap, no coding, and no cut wiring.

Which cars does this fit?

The BMW 2 Series Coupe G42 (220i, 230i, M240i and variants) from 2021, and the M2 G87 from 2023 — with either Adaptive LED (S552A) or Standard LED headlights, in EU or US spec. One set covers both headlights. It does not fit the front-wheel-drive 2 Series Gran Coupé (F44) or the previous-generation F22/F23.

Adaptive and Standard look identical — how do I tell which I have?

Not by looking; on the G42/G87 there's no external difference. The behavioral clue: Adaptive headlights run an anti-glare matrix high beam that visibly blanks segments around other cars and follows your steering at night — Standard headlights hold a fixed pattern. The definitive check is option code S552A on your vehicle order. Send us your VIN and we'll confirm in minutes.

I have the Standard LED headlights — most kits don't fit them. Do yours?

Yes. Most yellow-DRL kits for the G42/G87 are built for the Adaptive headlights only. We manufacture a dedicated version for the Standard LED headlights too — matching BMW's own "LED module Basic" — in both EU and US spec.

Which market version do I need?

The one your car was originally built for — not where it's registered now. UK cars take the EU version. A US-market car imported to Europe still takes the US version. If in doubt, send us your VIN.

My daytime running light shows a malfunction warning / one ring is out. Will this fix it?

If the fault is a failed DRL module — the usual cause when a ring goes dark and the dash shows a daytime-running-light warning — then yes. These replace the factory modules outright, so a dead OEM module leaves the car with the fault gone and the White/Yellow switching gained. If you suspect wiring damage rather than the module, send us your VIN and symptoms first.

Will it throw errors or need coding?

No. The modules draw the same current and speak the same signals as the factory DRL, so there are no dashboard warnings and nothing to code. The welcome light works as before.

Do the adaptive functions still work on S552A cars?

Yes. The DRL is a separate circuit — the anti-glare matrix high beam, adaptive behavior, high-beam assistant, and welcome-light sequences all continue working exactly as BMW designed.

Is it reversible? What about a lease return or dealer visit?

Fully reversible. Your factory modules come out intact and the harness is never cut — the inline box uses factory connectors on both sides. Bolt the OEM modules back in with the same screws and the car is exactly as it left the factory.

How do I switch colors?

From the driver's seat, with low beams off: flash the high beams 3 times to toggle between White and Yellow. Five modes total — 5× activates Auto, 7× Strobe, 11× Ambient Breathing, and 9× resets to factory White. Your selection is remembered through ignition cycles.

What is Auto mode?

An ELERON exclusive: flash 5× and the DRL follows your low beams from then on — Yellow when the beams are off, White when they come on. It's the same day/night behavior logic as the OEM CSL cars, and it means you never touch the toggle again.

I have the previous-generation 2 Series or M2 (F22/F23/F87). Is there a set for me?

Yes — a different one. The F22/F23 and F87 M2 use their own DRL modules; see our F22 LCI White/Yellow DRL module set for those cars.

Can I install this myself?

Yes, if you're comfortable removing a wheel and fender liner. Basic hand tools, 1.5–2 hours for both sides, no lift required. A shop will quote 1–2 hours of labor.

Is this the same as the OEM "LED module High / Basic" parts?

It replaces them. BMW's own modules (63115A043C1–3C8, depending on market and headlight type) are fixed white units. The ELERON set mounts on the same points with the same screws and adds the switchable White/Yellow function the OEM parts don't have.
